The Moon Sees Your Soul

Happy Solar Eclipse! I was inspired by today’s events to share this Chamomile Moon Milk. The bright color reminds me of the sun while the name and function remind me of the moon.

I’ve been struggling this summer to post regularly. I’m stuck in vacation mode and getting back into the grind has been especially tough. Last week started off with me juggling all the balls. But then Thursday came and I dropped them.

It began with a massively failed kitchen and photography day. Utensils fell to the ground with a single touch, splattering mess everywhere. Glasses and bowls with liquid were knocked over. Spices dispersed in clouds of dust. Cabinets, floors, and clothes were covered.

I guess I should have noticed the signs. I was especially clumsy and made many silly mistakes. Normal actions seemed difficult. But when you’re in the grind, you just attribute it to one of those days.

Once I sat down though I noticed I was more than tired, I was fatigued. My legs were throbbing, my joints ached, and words were difficult to form.

For me, all of these are signs that I’ve got inflammation somewhere causing me to be a massive dunce who should not be trusted with a knife.

Friday and my weekend were spent resting. This morning I felt good but even making this simple drink and taking pictures tired me out.

I first heard of moon milk from a Bon Appétit recipe and this Chamomile Moon Milk is adapted from it. I increased the amount of spice, used whole ashwagandha root instead of powder, and steeped some chamomile into the milk as well.

Straining the milk through a fine mesh sieve and cheesecloth is also a must for me, even though it adds more work. I don’t like choking on congealed spices.

All of the spices and herbs help with sleep, stress, and inflammation so it seemed like a perfect drink to treat myself to.

Chamomile, turmeric, and ashwagandha all have a slightly bitter fresh grass taste and smell to them. To combat that bitterness, use fat or sugar. You can add more milk or find the right balance of sweetness with honey. For me, that’s two teaspoons to make it perfect.

I added a teaspoon of melted raw cacao butter as well, which adds a slight decadence to your leisurely sips.

Servings 1
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup reduced fat or whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger
  • pinch nutmeg
  • 1 chamomile tea bag
  • 1 teaspoon ashwagandha root
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon raw cacao butter or coconut oil melted

Instructions

  • Combine the milk, turmeric, cinnamon, cardamon, ginger, and nutmeg in a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk vigorously, getting rid of spice clumps. Heat until the milk is steaming and just about to start simmering.
  • Add the chamomile tea bag and the ashwagandha root to the saucepan, cover, and steep for 10 minutes.
  • Remove the tea bag. Use a fine-mesh sieve and some cheesecloth to strain out most of the spices from the milk into a mug. Stir in the honey and top with the melted raw cacao butter.

Notes

This recipe is adapted from Alaina Sullivan’s from Bon Appétit.
Chamomile, turmeric, and ashwagandha root all have a slightly bitter grass taste and smell, especially combined all in one. Adding fat and sugar help counteract the effect, which is why I don’t recommend using nonfat milk. 1 to 2 teaspoons of raw honey is the perfect amount and using the raw cacao butter adds some more fats that really make all the ingredients shine in harmony (+ they both have lots of antioxidants).

There are lots of times when I should not be trusted with a knife either. I hope you’re feeling better, and this looks delicious! (I wish we could go back to the solar eclipse day- the weather since has been awful!)

  2. I LOVE the cheese cloth shot in this post, it’s amazing! I’m also obsessed with the color scheme you choose for this recipe. The yellow moon milk really pops against the bluish-gray background. So freaking pretty!

I’ve seen so many recipes recently for this type of drink, but I have yet to make it. Your recipe looks too good to pass up!!

    1. Thank you! I’m glad I included it, I almost didn’t. The color scheme worked out so well. I had just made the boards and this was my first official recipe I shot with them, so they were definitely worth the time and effort. I think something about moon milk captures peoples imagination and interest because I’ve seen a lot of recipes recently too.

    1. You can find it in both ground or whole forms in bulk spice bins (like at Whole Foods) or in nutrition or health stores. The spelling varies a lot and it’s also known as Indian Ginseng, Clustered Wintercherry, or Winter Cherry.

  3. I am so jealous that you guys got to see the eclipse yesterday! I rememebr seeing it as a child in the UK and how cold and dark it became. So eery. I think I would enjoy it more as an adult. This chamomile milk looks so luscious and creamy. That colour too! You know it’s got to be good for you and warm the soul 🙂

    1. I wish I could have seen complete totality! I did feel it get cooler but it only got a little darker. It made me want to be much better prepared for the next one!
